I made it back to Cali.
Well, we got here last night, and I almost had two heat strokes yesterday.
The first one happened before we even left Vegas because, for some reason, I decided to be helpful and help load the car.
We had to get everything I had been actively using or purchased during my time at my mom’s house. That took about 15 minutes. Then we had to go to the storage unit, which took another 15 minutes to unload. That’s where the stroller, Pack ’n Play, baby shower stuff, and approximately everything else this baby apparently owns were hiding.
Oh, and there’s no AC in the storage unit.
Then came another 20 minutes of helping my mom and Hector play Tetris with the truck because somehow we had to make all of this stuff fit.
Meanwhile, it was 105 degrees in Vegas when we left.
I have been completely spoiled while I’ve been in Vegas. I basically haven’t had to exist in the heat since June. My parents keep their AC on 24/7 at a very specific 66 degrees, and I have been perfectly happy living in that environment.
So suddenly spending about an hour outside in 105-degree heat, moving things around and helping load a truck at nine months pregnant, was apparently more than my delicate little body wanted to deal with.
And I almost had a second heat stroke once we got to California.
Except now we had humidity.
Vegas was hotter, but at least it was dry. California was supposedly 88 degrees when we arrived, but it felt closer to 95 because the air was so damp. It was the kind of heat where you walk outside and immediately feel like you need another shower.
By around 3 or 4 in the morning, I started overheating in my sleep.
I woke up feeling like I was going to throw up, had a major headache, and just felt awful. It took a while to cool me down enough to feel normal again and get back to sleep.
At one point, I almost asked to go to the ER because it was taking so long for me to cool down.
Thankfully, it wasn’t necessary.
And before anyone asks: I was drinking a shit ton of fluids yesterday. I had plenty of water, coconut water, and eventually we got me a Gatorade because electrolytes.
So no, this wasn’t me spending the entire day dehydrated.
My body just apparently forgot what heat feels like.
I’ve spent the last few months basically never leaving an air-conditioned environment in Vegas. I went from living in a house kept at 66 degrees around the clock to spending an hour outside in 105-degree heat while nine months pregnant, followed by arriving somewhere that felt like a humid sauna.
My body said, Absolutely not.
I even ordered a $60 fan from Amazon at around 4 in the morning because apparently this is my life now. I paid extra to have it delivered today, so everyone keep your fingers crossed that Amazon understands the urgency of my situation.
So today, I am staying in bed and recovering.
But honestly, the heat isn’t the only thing I’m recovering from.
My sleep schedule is also completely fucked from being awake while my parents are home.
In Vegas, my schedule became:
Wake up around noon.
Hang out.
Exist in the AC.
Stay up until approximately 3 AM.
Repeat.
And honestly? It worked.
My parents don’t get home until later, so sleeping half the day away meant I could still stay up and actually spend time with them.
I can’t exactly do that here unless I want to spend my days alone.
So now I have to figure out how to have a normal-person sleep schedule again, which feels especially rude considering I’m nine months pregnant and already exhausted.
But for today, I’m not worrying about any of that.
Today is officially a do absolutely nothing and let my body recover kind of day.
I made it back to Cali.
The luggage is here.
The stroller survived.
The Pack ’n Play survived.
The baby is still inside.
And after yesterday, honestly, that’s enough productivity for one day.
