The Traditions I Hope to Pass On

My family traditions are very seasonal, tied closely to the time of year and the feelings each season brings with it.

One of my favorite traditions growing up was going to the Christmas parade. It felt magical, bundled up in the cold, lights everywhere, music playing, and that sense that something special was happening. On Christmas Eve, we were allowed to stay up late and open one gift. We’d drink hot chocolate and listen to Christmas music, soaking in the excitement of what was coming the next morning. Those moments made Christmas feel warm and full, not because of how much we had, but because of how connected we were. We haven’t done anything like that in years, but it’s a tradition I still carry with me and would love to bring back one day.

New Year’s was always about family too. My grandpa used to say that we had to bring in the new year together. No matter what, we’d all be there—laughing, talking, and welcoming the year as one. That tradition changed after my Aunt Carol passed away. She was truly the glue that held our family together, and without her, things were never quite the same. Still, the meaning behind that tradition stays with me: the idea that starting something new feels better when you’re surrounded by the people you love.

These are the traditions I hope to pass down—not just the events themselves, but the feelings behind them. Togetherness. Warmth. Showing up for one another.
