Happy MLK Day

During a conversation with my niece, she asked me if today was a holiday exclusively for black people and if she got to stay away from school just because she was black. I found her curiosity genuine and decided to take the opportunity to explain to her the true message behind this day.

I elaborated on the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. was a champion of justice and freedom for everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. I emphasized that his message was not limited to Black people alone, but instead, it was intended for people of all races and nationalities. I encouraged her to understand that singling out one particular group would be a disservice to his legacy and teachings. I reminded her that the purpose of this day is to promote universal human rights and equality for all, which is what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. However, despite my explanation, my niece was still puzzled and asked me a very thought-provoking question – “Why do we only talk about Martin Luther King Jr. during Black History Month if he has a whole day?”

Her question stumped me, and I struggled to come up with a comprehensive answer. Why isn’t his legacy discussed outside of that month in school? Martin Luther King Jr. was an exceptional leader who dedicated his life to fighting for equality and justice for all people. Therefore, his legacy should be discussed and celebrated throughout the year, not just limited to a particular month. It got me thinking that we should be celebrating and discussing the accomplishments of all historical figures throughout the year, not just limiting them to one month.

Although my niece is still young and may not fully understand the whole truth about black history, it’s time to start educating her and ensure she grows up with a broader perspective on the world. While I can’t speak on behalf of the school system, I can certainly focus on what we do in our house to keep the conversation going and make learning a lifelong pursuit.
