If you could rewrite any book’s ending, which one would you choose?

This was one of those books I found through BookTok, and while I really enjoyed it overall, there’s one thing about the ending I just can’t stop thinking about.

For anyone who hasn’t read it yet, Happy Place is a second-chance romance about Harriet and Wyn, a couple who secretly broke up months ago but decide to pretend they’re still together during one last vacation with their close-knit group of friends. It’s funny, emotional, and explores friendship, love, burnout, and figuring out who you are outside of everyone else’s expectations.

Okay, this is where the spoilers really begin.

If I could change the ending of Happy Place by Emily Henry, it would be this:

Harriet doesn’t abandon her residency and entire medical career to become an amateur potter—a career that definitely isn’t paying off those student loans anytime soon.

Instead, she realizes that her current specialty is destroying her mental health, switches to one that’s a better fit, and transfers her residency somewhere closer to home.

Seriously! Why couldn’t she have become the small town’s primary care physician? It would’ve made so much more sense. She still could’ve ended up with the Wyn, she’d get to keep the career she’d worked years for, and the town would actually gain a desperately needed doctor. To me, that feels like a much more satisfying—and realistic—happy ending.

Maybe that’s just the practical side of me talking, but I would’ve loved an ending that showed you don’t have to abandon everything you’ve worked for to build a happier life.
