Audiobooks, Strangers, and Getting Outside

I joined a walking club.

Actually—two walking clubs. Which feels bold for someone who usually treats movement like a side quest instead of a daily habit, but apparently I’m in my “try things and see what sticks” era.

They’re audiobook walking clubs, which is exactly as intriguing and slightly confusing as it sounds. From what I understand (and I’ll fully confirm tomorrow), everyone shows up with their own audiobook, puts on their headphones, presses play, and just… walks. Together. In silence. Like a wholesome little cult, but with cardio and character development.

The idea is simple and kind of genius: meet new people and get moving at the same time. It’s especially perfect for people like me who would happily stay inside all day reading if no one intervened. Walking with strangers gives it structure, and the audiobooks give us something to focus on until being around new people starts to feel a little more normal.

Tomorrow is my first ever audiobook walk, and I genuinely don’t know what to expect. Do we chat before? After? Never? Is it speed walking or a soft, contemplative stroll? Are we allowed to make eye contact or is that against the vibe? I will find out soon enough.

I joined two different clubs because I’m curious how much walking I’ll actually end up doing—and also because apparently I’m open to becoming someone who has multiple walking groups. Best case scenario, I fall in love with it, accidentally become a walking person, and rack up miles without even noticing. Worst case, I get fresh air, listen to a good book, and awkwardly coexist alongside other humans for a bit, which honestly still sounds like a win.

Mostly, I’m just excited. Excited to move my body, excited to try something new, excited to show up without overthinking it. I’ll report back after my first walk—either as a fully converted walking-club enthusiast or as someone who learned that silent group walking is not her calling.

Either way, I’m proud of myself for trying.
