Winter Solstice

Today is the winter solstice, a day that holds a special magic! But what exactly is the winter solstice? It’s the thrilling moment when one half of our planet is tilted the farthest away from the sun. This marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year, a remarkable turning point that signals the gradual return of longer days. Let’s celebrate this unique astronomical event that brings with it the promise of brighter days ahead!

I spent the day with my pagan friend to learn about some winter solstice traditions, and there are many! From offering tree tributes—like sprinkling seeds, using glitter, and trimming dead trees—to everyone naming a blessing for the year, such as something they’re happy about from the past year or something they wish to achieve in the upcoming year. She shared a winter solstice prayer and a Yule blessing with me.

However, the tradition that stood out to me the most was decorating the Yule log. Since we didn’t have a traditional Yule log, we made a super cute chocolate one instead. Before we put the cake in the oven, her daughter showed us a charming chant for the treat: “Into the oven, we slide this treat, may all hold close and life be sweet.” She learned this from the book The Return of the Light, which shares stories from around the world about the winter solstice.
