The spring semester is here, and honestly, I’m already feeling a bit overwhelmed—not because of grades, but because I’m only taking two classes, which means I’m pushing back my transfer date yet again. I learned the hard way that juggling a full course load while working full-time was just too stressful for me, and I really struggled with the pressure. But having just two classes is leaving me feeling a bit bored.
So, I’m giving myself a little extra homework! I will dedicate the time I’m not in class or at work to focusing on a ten-page argumentative essay debating the impact that the art group ASCO has had on Chicano culture. I’ll use their photograph “Al a mode” as my main source to explore their political resistance through art.
If this sounds familiar, I was supposed to write this essay two years ago, but you know how life can get in the way!
So now, because I’m bored, I’ve decided to do this with everything I have going on—like moving, losing 60 pounds, planning Hector’s birthday party, navigating my new job, and organizing a wedding— I decided to focus on what can only be described as a thesis paper. It’s not a requirement or an assignment, but it’s something I want to do as a special farewell to Compton College. I really hope to get it published before I graduate!
It’s funny to think I started out as a business major, dreaming of opening a bakery. That feels so small compared to what I want now! I’m aiming for a master’s, I want to teach, and I’m excited to find a way to blend communications and ethnic studies together. I’ve seen how it can come together in classes like small group communications, intercultural communications, and even interpersonal communications.
