I’ve always had a soft spot for history—not in the “memorize every date and detail” way, but more like getting swept away by different eras and the fascinating people from those times. Lately, I found myself captivated by Archduke Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and his marriage to Mary of Burgundy. Their political union, ambition, and romance got me thinking, “What if I took this story, added a sprinkle of magic, and rolled a D20 to see where it leads?” And just like that, I dreamed up a tale that blends history, fantasy, and the fun vibes of a DnD campaign.
If History Had a Little More Magic
If I describe my book as featuring a princess/duchess who only inherits her duchy after getting married, and a He-Man–like archduke who is both her protector and partner, plus some court intrigue, forbidden card games, battlefield strategies, and a touch of magic—well, it might sound a bit trope-heavy, and honestly, it probably is! This is actually the third novel I’ve started (who knows if I’ll finish it?). I have so many ideas swirling around in my head, but sometimes it feels like completing them all is an uphill battle.
I didn’t want to set out and stick strictly to historical accuracy—if I tried, I would definitely get lost in timelines and political details! I adore Philippa Gregory’s novels; they’re so well-researched and immersive, but my mind doesn’t quite operate that way. Instead, I drew inspiration from a real royal marriage that made history and turned it into a world where storms can be summoned, shields are unbreakable, and slow-burn romances are just as important as political games.
This story is a loving mix of my passion for DnD-style strategy, my fascination with historical figures, and my affection for romantic fantasy—something grand in scale yet intimate at its core. Picture intricate alliances, surprising betrayals, skillful games, and tender, playful moments between characters that make them feel real and relatable—not just plot devices.
So, in a nutshell, this story comes from a place of obsession, imagination, and a wish to make history lively, magical, and beautifully human.
